Residents of Bugyera Parish in Buyanja Subcounty, Rukungiri District, are facing a serious water shortage, with some forced to walk long distances to access water.

Rurunda Bruno, a resident, said they used to collect water from boreholes, streams, and rivers in nearby valleys, which they share with animals, putting their lives at risk. He noted that they have suffered for a long time without access to clean water, leading to frequent cases of waterborne diseases in the area.

Kashagama Edison, the Chairperson of Nyakiju Village, echoed similar concerns. He said residents have endured the same challenge for years, with waterborne diseases remaining common as they continue to drink dirty water from valleys shared with animals. He added that even those with water taps go for months without running water.

Mary Atuzarirwe, the Area Councillor for Bugyera Parish, said the situation is even more challenging during school terms, making it difficult for mothers to prepare for their families since they spend many hours looking for water. She added that congestion at the few available water points—serving over 300 people from more than 10 villages—causes further delays.

She appealed to relevant authorities to intervene and prevent residents from contracting waterborne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhoea.

In response, Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the LCIII Chairperson of Buyanja Subcounty, acknowledged the challenge. He said their hopes lie in the Kahege Water Project, which had faced technical problems but has now stabilized. He urged residents to be patient as water from the project will soon reach their area.
