Police in Rukiga District are investigating a suspected murder following a deadly assault that claimed the life of a 30-year-old bricklayer, Bright Hakiri, a resident of Rushayo Cell, Kishaje Parish in Bufundi Sub County, Rubanda District.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on the night of May 25, 2025, at around 9:00 PM in Rwakimuri Cell, Nyakabungo Parish, Bukinda Sub County, Rukiga District.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had earlier engaged in a drinking session with a co-worker, identified as Nkurunungi Fortune, at a local bar owned by one Ninsiima. The two, who had been working together at a bricklaying site managed by a one Twebaze Evalisit, allegedly quarreled over payment they had received from their employer.

The disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation later that night at their shared residence, where they reportedly fought using sticks. The following morning, their manager found Hakiri unconscious and called a doctor to administer treatment at home. Sadly, Hakiri was pronounced dead moments later.

A case file of murder was opened by police. The crime scene was visited, documented, and statements were recorded from several witnesses. A postmortem examination was conducted, and the body was handed over to family members for burial.

Two suspects, Nkurunungi Fortune and Twinamatsiko Brian, have since been arrested and are currently in custody to aid police with ongoing investigations.
