Uganda’s leading opposition figure, Bobi Wine, was today morning apprehended upon his return to the country from an overseas trip, as reported by his political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP).
The former musician-turned-politician arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Thursday morning after visiting several countries, including South Africa.
A photograph accompanying the report depicted two individuals seemingly restraining him on the airport tarmac. Law enforcement authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Bobi Wine’s supporters had intended to gather in large numbers to escort him to his residence north of the capital, Kampala, in order to welcome his return. However, the police had declared such assemblies as unlawful.
In the preceding month, Ugandan police had declared a ban on NUP-organized rallies throughout the nation, citing concerns about maintaining public order.
