Apollo Turyamureeba, affectionately known as Banunu within his community, has endured a harrowing ordeal at the hands of his son, Nuwagaba Ivan, for several years. The conflict escalated three years ago when Nuwagaba, a 40-year-old boda boda rider, turned hostile towards his father and sister, Eunice Kyakuhaire, resorting to physical assaults against them.

The crux of the discord revolves around Apollo’s decision to divide his land situated in Nyakabale Cell, Kebisoni Town Council. However, Nuwagaba vehemently opposed this division and repeatedly removed boundary markers, claiming the entirety of the land for himself.

Apollo had hoped to sell a portion of his land to fund the construction of a home, thereby liberating himself from dependence on relatives in Nyamambo B Cell. Yet, Nuwagaba’s persistent interference thwarted his plans, leading Apollo to seek legal recourse at the Kebisoni Town Council Police Post multiple times.

Efforts to address the matter through legal channels culminated in Nuwagaba’s arrest and subsequent detention on April 13, 2024. Despite pleading repentance, Nuwagaba resumed his hostile behavior upon returning home, prompting him to go into hiding. Compounding the situation, his wife, Peace Turyashaba, a bar service provider in Kebisoni Town Council market Lockups, has allegedly abetted his actions.

Apollo, speaking out against his son’s actions, expressed his profound disappointment, having shared his land in good faith with an adult who now jeopardizes his safety and well-being. He implored authorities for intervention to alleviate his suffering.

In a separate incident, Eunice Kyakuhaire, Nuwagaba’s sister and caregiver to their father, filed a case of assault against him on May 10, 2024, under file number KAS ASSAULT 06/10/05/2024. She accused Nuwagaba of issuing death threats over a dispute involving the consumption of Matooke.

Local leaders, including Katamba Richard, the Chairperson of LC1 Nyakabale Cell, and Kabangira Alex, Chairperson of the Boda Boda Riders Association at Kebisoni stage, expressed frustration over the inability to effectively address Nuwagaba’s transgressions. Despite efforts to apprehend him, the police’s swift release of Nuwagaba has left community members feeling powerless.

The situation has reached a tipping point, with the Boda Boda Riders Association set to convene a meeting on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, to consider dismissing Nuwagaba for his alleged misconduct and theft.

The plight of Apollo Turyamureeba serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding family disputes and land tenure issues, underscoring the need for swift and effective intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals within communities.
