The Rt. Rev. Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of North Kigezi Diocese has called on Christians to deepen their understanding of the significance of Christmas.
Speaking during a worship service at Kinyansano Emmanuel Cathedral this afternoon, Bishop Asiimwe reminded congregants that Christmas marks the day God demonstrated His immense love for humanity by sending His only Son, Jesus Christ, to save sinners.
“Christmas is a time for forgiveness, worship, repentance, and reconciliation,” he emphasized. The bishop expressed concern over behaviors that contradict the spirit of Christmas, such as excessive drinking, theft, and immorality. He described these actions as shameful and called on Christians to return to God.
Bishop Asiimwe also reflected on the humble circumstances of Jesus’ birth, noting that the good news of the Messiah’s arrival was revealed to livestock farmers rather than wealthy elites, political leaders, or prominent figures. “This reminds us that God is a faithful and just God who accepts everyone who seeks Him,” he said. He urged Christians to repent sincerely, reconcile with one another, and obey God’s commands.
In his message, Bishop Asiimwe encouraged families to foster unity and avoid behaviors that breed discord. He singled out alcoholism as a major source of family problems and warned against sins like adultery, which may appear tempting but ultimately lead to destruction.
“Even sins committed in darkness will one day be brought to light, as God will be the ultimate judge,” he cautioned.
The bishop concluded by urging Christians to engage in genuine repentance, restore damaged relationships, and make amends for any harm they have caused. “Jesus requires clean hearts,” he said, warning against superficial repentance.
Bishop Asiimwe’s message served as a powerful reminder of the need to celebrate Christmas in a manner that reflects its true meaning—through faith, love, and devotion to God.
