The Bishop of Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Associate Prof. Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, has made his first-ever pastoral visit to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, urging health training institutions to prioritize health education alongside medicine and surgery in their academic programs.

During the visit, Bishop Mwesigwa commissioned a new chaplaincy conference hall, which will also serve as a counseling center. He emphasized the importance of ministering to both patients and health workers, as he has previously done at Mbarara Central Prison.

He noted the hospital’s challenge of overcrowding and called for support from neighboring facilities like Ruharo Mission Hospital, which recently acquired a modern digital diagnostic machine.

Bishop Mwesigwa also criticized the spiritual blindness of people who fail to appreciate the value of small jobs, urging respect for all work as a step toward future promotion.

Acting Hospital Director, Dr. Deus Twesigye, highlighted major strides in ART diagnostics and laboratory services, now internationally accredited. He also announced the hospital’s new mega oxygen plant, producing over 100,000 cylinders per hour. However, he noted ongoing challenges, including a shortage of staff and inadequate accommodation.

Former Mbarara City Councilor and aspiring MP for Mbarara City North, Benon Kajubi Maisho, commended the bishop’s visit, saying his message brought encouragement to many.
