The Right Reverend Gaddie Akanjuna, Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, has called upon Christians to actively support government initiatives such as the Poverty Eradication Program (PDM) in order to combat poverty at the household level.

Bishop Akanjuna delivered this message during the opening of the 2024 Brethren Conference for the Diocese, held at the Convention Site on Rugarama Hill in the Northern Division of Kabale Municipality. The conference, operating under the theme “Mutashushanisibwa n’ab’obusingye obu” derived from Romans 12:2, commenced on Thursday and is scheduled to conclude on Sunday. Distinguished speakers at the event include Bishop Amos Magezi, the Bishop for North West Ankole, Rev. Can. Dr. Rebecca Nyegenye, Rev. Andrew Agaba, and Rev. Can. Prof. Medard Rugyendo, among others.

Bishop Akanjuna commended the Ugandan government for implementing impactful programs like PDM and Emyooga, urging Christians to embrace these initiatives as effective tools for poverty eradication within their households. He further encouraged active Christian involvement in government programs, such as PDM, emphasizing the formation of groups based on household income to enhance development.

Highlighting the root causes of poverty at home, Bishop Akanjuna pointed to issues like alcoholism, sexual immorality, and persistent conflicts. He observed that many individuals have financial accounts in bars rather than in traditional banks.

Moreover, the Bishop emphasized the prevalence of temptations in the modern world, cautioning Christians against succumbing to them if they seek to receive God’s blessings.
