The Lions Clubs in Uganda celebrated the ascension of Mr. Benon Kataate, a retired banker, to the position of District Governor of Lions District 411B-Uganda. Mr. Kataate began his leadership on July 1, 2024, becoming the sixth governor since Uganda became an independent district separate from Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

A member of the Lions Club of Mbarara, Mr. Kataate is the first governor from the Western region since former Mbarara City Mayor Mr. Wilson Tumwine, who served 14 years ago. The Lions organization, which stands for Liberty Intelligence Our Nations Safety, was founded in Chicago, USA, in 1917 and is one of the largest service club organizations in the world with over 1.4 million members.

Mr. Kataate succeeds Dr. Stanley Bubikire, who in turn succeeded Ms. Christine Amongin Aporu, a former Teso Affairs Minister and current commissioner of the Uganda Land Commission. Formerly a manager with Uganda Commercial Bank and other banks in the country, Mr. Kataate was installed as district governor at an international conference in Melbourne, Australia, on June 25, 2024. He will serve a one-year term.

To celebrate his appointment, clubs from the Western region participated in activities on Sunday, including a charity walk in Mbarara town from Makenke to Independence Park, followed by a dinner hosted at Nkore Place in Kakyeka, Mbarara City.
