Ugandans have been urged to avoid laziness in order to achieve development and success.
This call was made on January 27th by Robert Asiimwe, a commissioner on the SACCO and Cooperative Board in Uganda. Asiimwe was addressing members of Rukiga SACCO Limited during their pre-AGM meeting held at Christ the King Church in Rukungiri Municipality.
Asiimwe expressed concern over the increasing number of people who exhibit laziness and fail to provide for their families. He criticized the youth, particularly those who spend their mornings idling instead of preparing for the day’s work. He emphasized that cooperation and transparency are essential for the growth and success of SACCOs. Asiimwe further urged members to embrace hard work, set achievable goals, and prioritize financial management as key pillars for SACCO development.
Rev. Ivan Muhoozi, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors, commended the commitment and strong relationship between SACCO members and staff, which he credited for strengthening the organization’s development. He encouraged members to remain focused on building a brighter future.
Meanwhile, Medias Kabajurizi, the General Manager of Rukiga SACCO, urged members to be faithful and consistent in repaying their loans to ensure the SACCO’s growth and sustainability. Kabajurizi noted that the Rukungiri branch, though relatively new, is facing significant challenges, particularly in loan repayment.
Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, who founded Rukiga SACCO Limited in 2002, revealed that his primary goal was to support development and combat domestic violence. He explained that many women were previously forced by their husbands to surrender their hard-earned income.
Currently, Rukiga SACCO Limited boasts a membership of 37,000, with nine branches in neighboring districts such as Rukungiri and Kabale. The SACCO has a loan portfolio exceeding 1 billion Ugandan shillings.
