Authorities in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District are facing a challenging situation as they care for a one-month-old baby boy who was discovered abandoned in a bush on Monday morning.
This infant was found in the vicinity of Kamushaga Junction in Kisharara Cell, Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub County. He was discovered by local women who were on their way to tend to their gardens, and they promptly took him to the Area Chairperson LC1, Jane Kandimu.
Jane Kandimu, the Chairperson of LC1 for Kisharara Cell, is now responsible for the child’s welfare. She has reported the situation to the relevant authorities and is prepared to care for the baby in case the parents do not come forward.
Muhumuza David Kaboona, the Sub County Councilor representing Rwakirungura Parish, has strongly criticized the act of abandoning babies and appealed to parents to provide support to their daughters who may be facing early pregnancies. He pointed out that these distressing incidents occur due to fear and a lack of support for young mothers.
Mukuru Alison, the Rukungiri District Probation Officer responsible for welfare, also condemned this troubling trend. He noted that incidents like this seem to be on the rise, with one or two cases reported every three months.
He urged communities to be vigilant and investigate instances where women in their areas appear to be struggling, in order to prevent such incidents and initiate appropriate investigations.
