A tragic road accident in Rukungiri District has claimed the life of a four-year-old boy after being knocked by a speeding motorcycle on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. in Runyamunyu Cell, Bugangari Parish, Bugangari Sub-county, along the Rukungiri–Kihihi road.
According to police, the accident involved a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle registration number UFT 634K, ridden by Ian Amanya, 20, a resident of Mugamba Cell in Rukungiri Municipality. The deceased has been identified as Johnvian Owomugisha, a four-year-old son of Denis Tukwasibwe, a resident of Runyamunyu Cell.
Preliminary police reports indicate that the rider, who was heading from Rukungiri towards Kihihi while carrying two milk cans, was moving at a high speed when he found the child crossing the road. Despite efforts to avoid the minor, the motorcycle knocked him, causing both the rider and the child to fall.
The boy was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on the way.
Police visited and documented the scene, and the motorcycle has since been parked at Rukungiri Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). A postmortem examination has been conducted.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, attributed the accident to overspeeding and careless pedestrian behavior, adding that inquiries are ongoing.
