Police in Buhweju District have launched an investigation into an incident where a three-year-old child tragically died in a fire. The incident occurred on December 9, 2024, at approximately 5:30 PM in Nyamitoma Village, Bwoga Parish, Bwoga Sub-County, Buhweju District.

According to reports, the child had been left sleeping in the grandparents’ residential house when the fire broke out. Barned Bagonza, 40, a resident of the area, reported that the fire started in the kitchen area of the house and spread to the adjacent bedroom where the child was sleeping, ultimately consuming the room and leaving the child unrecognizable.

Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He explained that the house consisted of two rooms—a bedroom and a kitchen. The child’s grandmother had reportedly left beans cooking on traditional cooking stones and stepped out to her shop, located about 100 meters away, leaving the child alone and asleep.

A postmortem was conducted at the scene by Dr. Isaac Edyedu from Nsiika Health Center IV before the body was handed over to relatives. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
