A total of 28 candidates have been duly nominated by the Kabale District Electoral Commission, although no aspirant for the LC5 Chairperson seat had registered by the close of the day.

The Electoral Commission today, September 3rd, officially commenced the nomination exercise for Local Council Five (LCV) Chairpersons, Councillors, and Special Interest Group (SIG) representatives across the country. The exercise, which will run for three days until Friday, September 5th, is part of the roadmap leading to the 2026 general elections.

At Rukiko Hall, located at the Kabale District Headquarters, there was a steady flow of both incumbents and new hopefuls presenting their documents for nomination. The exercise is being presided over by Aisha Nansubuga, the Electoral Commission Administrator and Returning Officer for Kabale District.

According to Nansubuga, all 28 nominated candidates are vying for district councillorship positions. She urged aspirants to keep time during the exercise, warning that delays could affect their chances of successful nomination.

She further revealed that more than 10 hopefuls were turned away after presenting forged documents, including National Identification Numbers and nomination forms. Nansubuga advised candidates to submit only authentic documents to ease the process and avoid disqualification.

She also expressed concern that no candidate for the LC5 Chairperson position had come forward on the first day, urging potential aspirants to present themselves before the deadline.

Several candidates expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the exercise. Fulgence Ayebare, popularly known as “Fit Fit,” who recently lost in the NRM primaries for LCV Councillor representing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), was duly nominated to contest as an Independent. He cited irregularities in the primaries but expressed confidence that the Electoral Commission would ensure a level playing field. Ayebare pledged to prioritize lobbying for the welfare of PWDs if elected.

Anna Kobusingye, who is contesting as an Independent for LCV Councillor representing Women with Disabilities, shared similar sentiments, noting that the nomination process was smooth for candidates who had prepared the necessary documents.

The nomination exercise will continue until Friday, September 5th.
