Over 24 commercial motorcycles commonly known as Boda-bodas were yesterday impounded in Rukungiri district in an operation to enhance road safety which was launched across the country.

Over the weekend, the officer in charge of traffic Rukungiri district IP Tibeijuka James announced to intensified operations against errant boda boda riders.

According to Tibeijuka, the riders of the motorcycles which were rounded up, never had crush helmets, reflector jackets and had more than one passenger on board.

Tibeijuka revealed that the operation will continue to ensure the safety of riders and passengers especially during the days leading to the festive season.

He appealed to the riders to abide by traffic regulations, adding that the increased road carnage is attributed to boda-boda cyclists.

He also urged   passengers to desist from boarding   motorcycles which already have  occupants.

The police annual crime report indicated that boda bodas killed 1918 people including riders and passengers in 2021.

This meant that five people were killed by boda bodas every day last year whereas a total of 2393 people sustained injuries due to accidents caused by boda boda cyclists.
