Residents of Nyakinengo parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri district are facing a severe water shortage, forcing them to travel long distances in search of water from ponds and dams.

This scarcity has greatly impacted their daily lives, as they struggle with insufficient water for their needs and are even compelled to share water sources with animals, posing serious health risks.

The Kahengye water project, despite significant government investment, has failed to alleviate the water crisis in Rukungiri district, leaving residents disillusioned. Karekaho Deus, the chairperson LC1 of Rugunda cell in Nyakinengo parish, emphasized the importance of access to clean water for families and urged district authorities to address the situation promptly.

Byaruhanga Lawrence, the parish councilor of Nyakinengo, echoed these concerns, highlighting the necessity of clean water for household chores and expressing worry over the health risks associated with using contaminated water from ponds and dams. Lawrence also noted residents’ frustration, leading some to resort to damaging the water pipes installed in their area due to lost hope in accessing piped water.
