The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a stern warning to media practitioners about non-compliance with broadcasting regulations. This announcement was made by Victoria Sekandi, the UCC Legal Officer, during a one-day workshop held at Ankole Resort in Ntungamo Municipality.

Sekandi revealed that out of approximately 62 radio and TV stations operating in Western Uganda, only 20 have met UCC’s compliance standards. She stressed the importance of adhering to these regulations to avoid potential repercussions such as fines, suspension, or even cessation of operations. The UCC has promised to recognize and reward stations that follow the guidelines diligently.

Paul Mukasa, UCC’s Content Regulation Officer, addressed the misuse of government airtime by Resident District Commissioners (RDCs). He highlighted that some RDCs allow profit-oriented entities to use this free airtime, which contravenes the Minister of ICT and National Guidance’s directives. Mukasa emphasized that this airtime should be reserved for broadcasting national importance programs, including presidential speeches and government announcements. He urged both RDCs and radio management to familiarize themselves with these guidelines to ensure proper utilization.

Julius Sadic, representing the Director of Finance, underscored the need for media stations to settle all outstanding fees. He warned that non-compliance could jeopardize their chances of securing future government and non-government opportunities, and could result in the loss of broadcasting frequencies.

Radio and TV administrators voiced their concerns during the workshop, citing challenges such as inadequate engagement with UCC, poor communication, and the enforcement of costly, non-essential equipment. These issues have reportedly led to significant financial losses for media companies.

The workshop aimed to address these concerns and improve the relationship between media stations and the UCC, ensuring that all parties are well-informed and compliant with broadcasting standards.
