On Tuesday night, a tragic incident occurred in Kiziba Cell, Kinaba Sub County, Kanungu District, claiming the life of Arinaitwe Innocent, a 17-year-old resident.

Heavy rain began at approximately 10 pm and continued until around 5 am the following morning. During the night, a hill near the residence of Silver Tugabirwe, the father of the deceased, experienced a mudslide that demolished the structure where Arinaitwe was sleeping.

The entire area suffered damages, with houses developing cracks due to the force of the mudslide.

Despite efforts from the parents and supportive neighbors, attempts to rescue Arinaitwe were unsuccessful, and his lifeless body was eventually recovered.

Byamukama Robert, the Area Chairperson LC1, expressed shock at the intensity of the mudslide, noting the serious damage to roads. He mentioned that the police had not yet visited the scene, and preparations for the burial, scheduled for Thursday, December 7, 2023, are underway.

Tumukurate Chrosositumu, the Chairperson LC3 of Kinaaba Sub County, voiced concern about the recurring threat of mudslides in the area during the rainy seasons. He acknowledged that the government’s response to such incidents is a lengthy process. Chrosositumu advised locals to avoid residing in areas prone to landslides and to refrain from cultivating wetlands, as this disrupts drainage patterns. He emphasized the need for community education to raise awareness about challenges associated with heavy rainfall.
