A top-performing military officer was recognised for outstanding service with a Shs 10 million cash award from the Chief of Defence Forces during the national 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations held in Kabale District on Friday.

The award was presented as part of the annual Tarehe Sita commemorations, which mark the launch of Uganda’s liberation struggle on February 6, 1981, when the National Resistance Army (NRA)—now the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF)—began armed operations.

Tarehe Sita symbolises the birth of today’s UPDF and celebrates its enduring partnership with Ugandans in safeguarding peace, security and national stability. The recognition of exemplary officers highlights the UPDF’s commitment to professionalism, discipline and service to the nation.

The colourful ceremony attracted a high-profile audience, including the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi; Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa; Minister for Security Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi; former Prime Ministers Ruhakana Rugunda and Amama Mbabazi, who attended with his wife; and the Chief Justice. Senior military officials, local leaders and members of the public also turned up in large numbers.

Proceedings were ably guided by the official masters of ceremonies, Col. Magezi and Maj. Tabalo Kiconco, as troops, government officials and invited guests joined in the celebrations.

Tarehe Sita is commemorated every February 6 through national and regional events that honour Uganda’s liberation history while reaffirming the UPDF’s ongoing role in promoting peace, unity and socio-economic development across the country.
