Three individuals are currently in police custody in Kisoro, suspected of being involved in the murder of Sunday Calist, a 54-year-old Mukiga teacher residing in Nyakarembe village, Kagunga parish, Bukimbiri sub-county, Kisoro district.
According to reports filed at Bukimbiri Police Post on February 17, 2024, around 9:00 AM, the incident occurred in the early hours of the same day, approximately 3:00 AM, at Nyakarembe village. The suspects, identified as Bagyenyi Gerald (35 years old), Monday Ezra (38 years old), and Arinaitwe Thomas (40 years old), all residents of Birara village, Kagunga parish, Bukimbiri sub-county, Kisoro district, allegedly visited the home of the deceased. They purportedly informed Sunday Calist that a resident named Nyirabyiringiro Allen was severely ill and needed immediate medical attention. It was a customary practice within their community to seek assistance in such situations.
Sunday Calist, unaware of the danger, left his house to accompany the suspects to assist the purportedly sick individual. His wife witnessed the interaction and recognized the individuals as they led her husband away.
Subsequently, the wife grew suspicious of the circumstances surrounding her husband’s departure and decided to follow them. She traced them to the residence of Agaba Ezra, located approximately 100 meters away, where the suspects claimed they were taking the deceased to Ezra’s vehicle. To her horror, she discovered her husband’s lifeless body lying in front of Agaba Ezra’s house.
Upon investigation, fresh wounds were found on the deceased’s head, indicating a violent attack that resulted in fatal injuries.
The crime scene was thoroughly examined, and a postmortem examination was conducted on-site. Following the procedures, the body was released to the deceased’s relatives for burial rites.
The suspects were subsequently apprehended and are currently detained by the police as inquiries continue to uncover the motive behind the gruesome murder.
