Rukungiri Municipality is set to benefit from the Uganda Support to Municipalities Infrastructure Development (USMID) project in March 2026.

USMID is a World Bank-supported project that the government has implemented since 2013 to expand urban infrastructure and enhance the capacity of municipal local governments to generate their own revenues, improve urban planning, and strengthen financial management, procurement, and environmental and social systems.

While addressing the council during the Rukungiri District council meeting that happened on 26th February 2026, Rukungiri Municipal Mayor Charles Makuru noted that Rukungiri Municipality will start benefiting from the USMID project effective 15th March 2026.

The mayor expressed happiness that Rukungiri Municipality is among the five municipalities in Uganda that will benefit from the project, after many years of waiting.

He said the project will help improve the roads in the municipality, construct drainage systems, install street lights, among other developments.

In the same council meeting, Makuru also expressed unhappiness with the work being done at Kohororo Primary School, saying that the work done was of poor quality.

He said the classrooms were roofed with poor-quality iron sheets, and the doors and windows were also of poor quality.

Additionally, he said the same was done at Kiyaga Primary School, where the toilet facilities are also of poor quality.

He attributed this to poor supervision by councilors and their committees, urging them to always monitor the work done before commissioning.
