Eleven of the twelve town councils in Ntungamo District have received computers and printers to help in data collection.
The Ministry of Local Government has recently distributed 11 computers and printers to 11 town councils in Ntungamo District. Ntungamo District has 12 town councils, but Kitwe Town Council did not receive the equipment on the distribution date and is yet to receive it.
Speaking during the District Council meeting yesterday, Ntungamo District Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Kiza Fedelis, said that the computers are meant to support local revenue collection and data analysis, especially for accountability in tax collection systems.
Kiza Fedelis stressed that the computers are meant to ensure that all taxes collected are received by the local government. He added that anyone who pays money will receive a receipt from the Town Clerk or Town Agent as proof of payment. He noted that the computers will also help identify which businesses are paying revenue, how much is being collected, and which businesses are not complying with tax collection systems.
He strongly warned Town Agents and Town Clerks who may fail to use the systems as required that they will be held accountable. He urged them to use the computers effectively for their intended purpose. He also revealed that a training session has been scheduled for the coming week to equip them with the necessary skills.
Furthermore, Kiza said that most idle government buildings and land will be renovated to increase local revenue collection. He explained that the computers will systematically show all government land in each town council and how it is being used, in order to improve local revenue collections.
