A section of the newly elected leaders of Rukungiri Municipality and Rukungiri District have called on beneficiaries of the Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundiire group who contributed UGX 12,000 to accept the in-kind items promised to them, instead of requesting refunds.
This development followed a meeting held on Wednesday between the leadership of the group chaired by Senior Presidential Advisor on Agriculture and Local People, Ms Peace Rugambwa—and the newly elected leaders of both Rukungiri Municipality and Rukungiri District.
The meeting, aimed at exploring ways to help communities overcome poverty, brought together the new Rukungiri District LC V Chairperson, Mr. Anderewson Katebire Charles, along with his council, and the new Municipal Mayor, Mr. Kansiime Boaz Matita, and his team.
During the engagement, Ms Rugambwa reaffirmed her commitment to improving the livelihoods of Ugandans, saying her role as an advisor to the President is focused on uplifting local communities. She also presented a stock of mattresses, blankets, and bed sheets currently stored at Hotel Randavels in Rukungiri Municipality, noting that these items are yet to reach intended beneficiaries due to differing expectations—some people requesting refunds, while others prefer to receive the promised goods.
She further revealed that preparations are underway to bring President Yoweri Museveni to Rukungiri to engage directly with residents and understand their preferences regarding the initiative.
Following a viewing of the items, local leaders expressed support for the initiative and encouraged that distribution proceed. Mr. Katebire Charles emphasized that the program has already demonstrated its potential, urging relevant authorities to allow Ms Rugambwa to continue with the distribution.
Similarly, Mr. Lev Akatukunda, the councillor for Rwakabengo Ward in Rukungiri Municipality, commended the initiative and called for its continuation, noting the large number of mattresses awaiting distribution at Randavels. He also praised Ms Rugambwa for her commitment to serving Ugandans across political and social divides.
Other councilors from both the municipality and district also appealed to President Museveni to support the initiative, highlighting the need to address widespread poverty and improve living conditions in many communities across Rukungiri.
