A senior four student at Bwanga high school Omukyiyenje in Nyarushanje sub-county rRukungiri district is nursing severe injuries she sustained after being assaulted by the school headteacher Herbert Turyasingura and a section of teachers on Friday 7th October 2022 last week accusing her of escaping from school.
Shillah Ampereza 18 years claims that she encountered the head teacher just a few metres outside the school gate as she was accompanying her cousin sister to a nearby clinic in Omukyiyenje trading center after being permitted by the school matron.
Ampereza says the headteacher Mr. Turyasingura ordered the two students to report to his office where he assaulted them until she got serious injuries
The victim reported the matter to police which advised her to seek medical attention before going home since she was in much pain.
Temple Niwemuhwezi a medical worker at God’s reign clinic Omukyiyenje confirms that the victim came to their clinic for treatment on Friday 07/10/2022 with multiple wounds on the buttocks, legs, and arms
Joselyne Tumushabe , a grandmother to the victim who doubles as her guardian says she was shocked to find her grandchild with wounds resulting from corporal punishment she received from the headteacher and his staff.
Herbert Turyasingura the school headteacher says acted out of anger and asked the guardians to forgive him. He promised to cover all medical bills incurred.
The Rukungiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom condemned corporal punishments in schools saying that his office has received a number of parents and students complaining about some schools which are mistreating their children. He added any time from now the errant schools on and teachers will be called to his office .
He called upon school head teachers to use alternative disciplining methods than opting for corporal punishment which is against the law.
