Thousands of mourners from all walks of life gathered today in Nyakashaka Cell, Kyatoko Ward, Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, to bid farewell to 103-year-old Francis Kayonga, a resident of the area.
Born in 1922, the late Kayonga had struggled with prolonged illness, which ultimately led to his death.
Augustine Kayonga, a son of the deceased, described their father as a loving parent who balanced his affection among all his children. He noted that Kayonga was a skilled roofer whose work enabled him to educate and support his family.
Among the mourners was Rukungiri Municipality MP Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahirwa. He urged the attendees to focus on hard work and development, using the example of the late Mzee Kayonga, who worked diligently to ensure his children are now self-reliant. Rutahirwa also advised mourners to concentrate on development rather than politics, which he believes could hinder progress.
In his sermon, Rev. Fr. Elias Kasigaire, the Nyarushanje Parish Priest, encouraged the mourners to do good deeds while on earth to secure their place in heaven, emphasizing that there will be no opportunity for repentance at the time of judgment. He also commended the late Kayonga for his long-standing contributions to the church and its development.
The late Kayonga is survived by his wife, Janeroza Kayonga, ten children, thirty-five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
