Retired cleric Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has urged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to step aside and assume the role of elder within the National Resistance Movement (NRM), instead of seeking another term in office.
His remarks come amid growing speculation over the 2026 general elections and renewed public debate on leadership transition within the ruling party.
In an exclusive interview with Our Reporter at Kitanga Parish in Rukiga District, Fr. Gaetano argued that President Museveni’s prolonged stay in power creates the impression that the NRM lacks capable leaders who can take over the country’s top office. He insisted that the party has better people who are capable of succeeding the president.
Fr. Gaetano also expressed disappointment over the amendment of the constitution to remove presidential age limits. He said that after nearly four decades in power, President Museveni has nothing new to tell Ugandans that has not already been tried or promised.
When asked about the security forces’ handling of opposition presidential campaigns particularly those of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, Fr. Gaetano suggested that the size and energy of Kyagulanyi’s crowds appear to unsettle both the president and security agencies.
Despite his criticisms, Fr. Gaetano has been seen blessing President Museveni during his recent campaign trail in Kigezi. Just weeks earlier, he was also seen blessing Kyagulanyi. When questioned on whether blessing the president signaled a change of heart, Fr. Gaetano clarified that he has always believed in Museveni and prays that his blessings may inspire positive change.
He added that he has blessed many presidential candidates over the years and will continue to offer blessings to any candidate who seeks them.
