Residents of Nyakabare Parish, Rukoni West Sub-County in Ntungamo District, have expressed concerns about the lack of electricity in their area, which they believe is hindering development. They highlighted the financial burden and safety risks associated with using alternative power sources such as solar panels, batteries, generators, as well as dangerous methods like candles, lanterns, and lamps.
Praise Mureebe, a resident of Omukitibiko in Nyakabare Parish, told our reporter that while electricity has reached towns like Kitwe and Nyakyera, Nyakabare and other parts of Rukoni West Sub-County have been left behind. He noted that despite occasional measurements for electricity installation, these efforts have not resulted in any progress. Mureebe criticized local leaders for failing to advocate for the area, contrasting their lack of action with the efforts of leaders in other regions who have successfully developed their areas.
Gaston Mubangizi, another resident, mentioned that the lack of electricity affects their access to services such as shaving and grinding, and complicates obtaining items like metallic doors and scholar’s metallic cases. He emphasized the need for authorities to address this issue to promote development in the area.
In response, Frank Mwiru, the LC 3 Chairperson for Rukoni West Sub-County, stated that he is working with other authorities, including Ruhaama East County MP Benjamin Kamukama, to address the electricity issue in Rukoni West Sub-County.
