Residents of Rucence Parish, Kanyabwanga Subcounty in Mitooma District, have decried the increase in theft cases in their area. It is reported that despite having many policemen at their police stations, they have not been helping in regards to patrols, which gives thieves opportunities to fulfill their desires.

Speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson LC2 Rucence Parish, Joseph Begumisa, revealed that they have a number of youths who do not want to work but want to live well with no source of income, and they end up stealing other people’s belongings. He further said these youths attend bars from morning, and late at night they break into people’s houses and steal. He made a call to those in that bracket to find something productive to do, warning that if caught in the act, they would face it rough and end up in jail.

Musiime Eryeeza Kanyomozi, a resident of Rwibare A, also confirmed to our reporter that they have a big population of unemployed youth in their area who break into people’s houses during the day, steal harvested coffee left in the sun, and even harvest it themselves from the gardens. He further emphasized that security has not been of help to them as there are no patrols conducted, saying that by 8:00 pm the offices are already closed. He called for help from the upper leadership.

However, speaking to the Chairperson LC3 Kanyabwanga Subcounty, Nobert Tumwine Nyakubaho acknowledged the challenge but said that as the subcounty leadership, they are conducting workshops to sensitize the public on income-generating projects rather than waking up to go to bars and play gambling games. He further urged the public to be their first security as he coordinates with the security personnel to enhance security, saying many people are reckless to the extent of leaving coffee outside in the sun the whole day without anyone watching over it, expecting to find it safe in the late hours.
