Residents of Rwegongo and Kankamagayinya cells in Nyarushanje Subcounty, Rukungiri District, are demanding urgent repair of the Kagorogoro Swamp bridge along the Kisiizi–Nyarurambi–Kamaga road after it was damaged by a heavy Sino truck in June 2025.
The bridge, which is under the supervision of the Rukungiri District Local Government, connects the two cells and is a crucial route linking the community to Kisiizi Health Centre III, schools, and local markets. Its collapse has left residents stranded, with transport and trade activities severely disrupted.
Local leaders have expressed frustration over the situation, citing the increased risk of accidents as vehicles continue to use the damaged bridge. They also lamented that other essential services, such as clean water and electricity, have been neglected in the area, leaving residents further marginalized.
The collapse was reportedly caused by a sand-loaded truck attempting to cross the weak bridge, which gave way under the heavy weight. Since then, school children, patients seeking medical attention, and traders have faced difficulties crossing safely, with some forced to use alternative routes that are longer and more costly.
When contacted, Rukungiri District Engineer Eng. Nicholas confirmed that his office had received a report about the broken bridge. He explained that the district operates on a strict budget and does not have emergency funds. However, he assured residents that once funds are released, the bridge will be reconstructed.
The residents are calling on the district authorities to prioritize the repair to prevent potential accidents and restore normalcy to daily life in the affected communities.
