Residents of Bugyera in Kitojo Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have raised concerns over the poor service delivery at Karishonga Health Centre II, citing persistent understaffing and irregular operations.

Karishonga Health Centre II, established by the Church and later supported by the government, is reportedly struggling to provide consistent healthcare services. The facility currently relies on a single health worker, who also serves as the facility’s in-charge, leading to frequent closures during official working hours.

Community members, including the elderly and mothers, expressed frustration over the lack of reliable healthcare services. They noted that despite having invested in a nearby facility, they are often forced to travel long distances to access basic health services such as antenatal care and emergency treatment.

The residents also lamented the regular expiry of medical supplies due to the shortage of personnel to dispense them. Local leaders indicated that several attempts, including petitions and meetings with the district authorities, have been made to address the matter, but no lasting solution has been realized.

The health worker currently managing the facility attributed the challenges to the abrupt disappearance of his co-worker without formal notice. He explained that he has since reported the matter to his supervisors and continues to manage multiple responsibilities, including submitting reports to the district and attending mandatory workshops.

Rukungiri District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Hajj Masokoyi Swalik Wasswa, acknowledged the staffing gap at the health centre. He revealed that the district has retained some retired health assistants who are still active as they await their retirement benefits. He also assured residents that plans are underway to officially replace the absentee worker and strengthen service delivery at the facility.

Residents remain hopeful that urgent intervention will be made to ensure Karishonga Health Centre II serves the community effectively and consistently.
