Residents of Murambi Parish in Nyakizinga Sub County, Mitooma District, are increasingly concerned about the deteriorating condition of Kajuguta Bridge, which is maintained by the District.
Kajuguta Bridge is a vital link between Mitooma and Ntungamo Districts, connecting Murambi Parish in Nyakizinga Sub County to Kibariko Parish in Rwamabondo Town Council, Ntungamo District. The bridge, which spans the Nyamugoye River, handles a significant volume of water and is currently being maintained by residents and well-wishers through communal work using timber poles.
Andrew Barisigarira Kyambade, the Mitooma District NRM Chairperson, explained that they initially hired a boat to cross the river, but it proved ineffective as it couldn’t support vehicle traffic. This is a significant issue since the community relies on vehicles for trade with Rwamabondo Town Council, their primary center for shopping, milling, and various institutions.
Patrick Muramira, a local counselor, expressed frustration over the bridge’s hazardous state, especially during the rainy season. He recounted an incident where one person drowned while attempting to rescue another, and a vehicle sank into the bridge, causing further losses.
Richard Mujuni Gambanokora, the Chairperson of LC3 in Nyakizinga Sub County, highlighted that the sub-county is experiencing revenue losses because the bridge’s condition hampers traders’ access to the Omukibaate open market and other goods. Despite petitioning the District, they have yet to receive a positive response.
Benon Karyieja Boneza, the Chairperson of LC5 in Mitooma District, acknowledged that the bridge’s repair is beyond the district’s financial capacity. However, on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, assessors from the Central Government, sent by the Permanent Secretary under a presidential directive, visited to identify one bridge in each district for construction. Kajuguta Bridge has been submitted for this initiative.
