The Secretary of the Presidential Awards Committee and Head of the Chancery Department in the President’s Office, Hajjat Malole Zamina, has called on the public to actively participate in identifying deserving individuals for recognition by the Head of State.

Speaking during a one-day workshop held at the Rukungiri District Council Hall, Hajjat Zamina emphasized the need to raise public awareness about the selection criteria for national honors and awards. The workshop aimed to increase participation, foster trust in the awards process, and promote its objective of encouraging exemplary leadership and inspiring excellence at all levels of service.

Hajjat Zamina explained that every year, the Head of State awards medals to outstanding achievers in various fields during national ceremonies, recognizing their contributions to national development. However, she noted that the awards process has, over time, been overshadowed by personal interests, financial influence, and political conflicts, detracting from its intended purpose as outlined in the National Honours and Awards Act.

She urged the public to avoid nominating individuals based on their financial status or personal affiliations, cautioning against using political rivalries to deny deserving individuals recognition. She reiterated that the awards should inspire patriotism, nationalism, and a commitment to excellence within communities.

To address the lack of awareness about the selection criteria, Hajjat Zamina has embarked on a nationwide tour to engage district authorities in identifying outstanding individuals for presidential recognition. Her efforts have so far covered Kigezi sub-region districts, including Kabale, Rubanda, Rukiga, Kisoro, Rukungiri, and are now extending to Kanungu District.

Hajjat Zamina encouraged members of the public to collaborate with Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) to nominate individuals who have made significant contributions in areas such as education, health, leadership, agriculture, and business across both the public and private sectors.

Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Steven Nsubuga Bewaayo, acknowledged the public’s confusion about the selection process. He clarified that nominations are handled by the District Security Committee, which is chaired by the RDC and relies on input from the District Internal Security Officer (DISO).

Bewaayo admitted that short-notice calls for nominations, often tied to upcoming national events, have led to gaps in the process, resulting in public dissatisfaction after awards are issued. He emphasized that nominations should be rooted in community feedback and appreciation for individuals’ outstanding contributions.

The RDC commended the President’s Office for its efforts to educate the public, which he believes will enhance understanding and trust in the honors and awards process.
