Six village chairpersons and two sub-county councilors from Buhunga sub-county in Rukungiri district on Thursday defected from the FDC to the NRM party.

They were welcomed by the Minister of Security and Rujumbura County legislator, Honorable Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi.

The two sub-county councilors who switched allegiance are Hebert Karamuzi representing Kihanga parish and Ahab Ndyamuhakyi from Kyaruyenje parish, both originally elected on the FDC ticket. Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Councilor Hebert Karamuzi stated that they had initially joined the FDC with hopes of defeating the NRM and taking over, but seeing the continued strength of the NRM, they decided to join its ranks. Karamuzi called on others still in opposition parties to join them for the collective development of their sub-county, urging the Minister to expedite electrification efforts in areas where poles have been installed without electricity.

Benon Mugisha, the Chairperson of Buhunga sub-county, commended Minister Jim Muhwezi for supporting the sub-county with fuel to supplement their limited funds for rehabilitating various dilapidated roads.

Minister Jim Muhwezi welcomed 245 opposition members into the NRM, specifically acknowledging leaders from the FDC, including councilors and village chairpersons who had previously opposed him and his party. He urged the people of Buhunga to collaborate with him to improve services, such as extending electricity and water to all villages in the sub-county, following the rehabilitation of several roads.

During the function, Muhwezi also disclosed his collaboration with the Vice Chairperson of NRM in Rukungiri district and former Rukungiri district Chairperson, Andrewson Katebire, aimed at advancing the NRM’s presence and development in the district.

Muhwezi commended NRM mobilizers for their efforts in persuading opposition members to join the ruling party.
