Police in Mitooma District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a primary school teacher who was strangled.
The incident occurred at an unknown time on June 6, 2024, in Ryakarungi Village, Bugongo Parish, Bitereko Sub-county in Mitooma District.
Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Banabus Birungi, 48, a teacher at Mugongo Primary School and a resident of the mentioned address.
According to Tumusiime, police have arrested two suspects on allegations of murder: Jackline Owensi, 43, and Dinah Kobukwensi, 40, both residents of Mitooma District. It is alleged that Owensi was married to the deceased, while Kobukwensi was his sister-in-law.
On June 5, 2024, Birungi left home to teach but never arrived at the school. He was last seen at home in the evening, wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt. Owensi was also present, and it is further alleged that the couple had domestic issues.
On the morning of June 6, 2024, Owensi informed residents that Birungi had committed suicide. However, upon inspecting the body, they disputed the suicide claim. Additionally, Kobukwensi was found washing clothes, including those Birungi had been wearing. Fearing the residents might turn against her, Owensi reported the matter to the police, and she was detained.
Tumusiime stated that a postmortem examination was conducted, and body samples were taken for toxicological analysis. Investigations are ongoing.
