The Kyenjojo Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Gloria Aciba Nimungu, has sentenced a police officer to four years in prison after convicting him of stealing government drugs.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Kule Yusuf was arrested in September last year along with six others during an operation led by the National Drug Authority (NDA) aimed at curbing the theft of government drugs.
The group was charged with stealing government medications, including ARVs and antimalarials, and selling them in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
While the other six accused individuals pleaded guilty and received prison sentences ranging from three to six years, Kule’s case continued. In delivering the sentence, Magistrate Nimungu stated that the eleven months Kule had already spent in remand would be deducted from his sentence.
Abiaz Rwamwiri, the Public Relations Officer of the National Drug Authority, welcomed the ruling, stating that it would serve as a deterrent to others with similar criminal intentions, which undermine the delivery of quality services to the intended population.
