Police in Buhweju District are searching for a group of individuals accused of verbally assaulting a 28-year-old man to death over alleged chicken theft.
The incident occurred on October 24, 2024, at around 1:00 PM in Rwomushwojwa Cell, Kashenyi Ward, Kashenyi-Kajani Town Council, Buhweju District. Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson Marcial Tumusiime confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as Louis Kiiza, a 28-year-old peasant from the area.
According to reports, on October 21, 2024, Everlyn Abenawe, the mother of the deceased, was approached by a group led by the LC2 chairperson of Kashenyi Ward. They alleged that Louis Kiiza and another individual had been arrested on suspicion of stealing chickens belonging to Rose, a resident of Katabago-Kijumbura, Bihanga Sub-county. The group demanded that Abenawe discipline her son and compensate for the stolen chickens, which she was unable to do.
The suspects were reportedly taken to Katabago Village, where they were assaulted at the residence of Frank Ainemukama. One of the suspects, Nuwarinda, was later found by his relatives in a nearby bush and taken home. However, Louis Kiiza was not seen after the assault.
On October 24, 2024, concerned villagers and Kiiza’s relatives conducted a search, eventually finding his body in a banana plantation in Kateeba. Tumusiime reported that the body showed signs of physical injuries on the head, legs, and hands, and had begun decomposing. The body was transported to Nsiika Health Center IV for a postmortem, and investigations are ongoing.
