Police in Kanungu District are investigating a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a male pedestrian in Nyakiyanga village, Kihihi sub-county.
According to the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred on the evening of July 21, 2025, at around 7:00 PM. A white Toyota Passo with registration number UBG 257F, which was traveling from Kihihi town toward Kazinga village, reportedly knocked a pedestrian identified as Kasigwa Onesmus, a male adult resident of the area.
The victim was quickly rushed to Kigezi Community Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police say the driver, only identified as Joseph alias Kabata, fled the scene after the incident and hid the vehicle at his home. He is currently on the run.
The scene was visited by the District Traffic Officer and the police team. The body of the deceased was later taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for postmortem, and the vehicle has since been recovered and is being held at Kihihi Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Police have opened inquiries and launched a manhunt for the suspect.
