Police in Kanungu District are investigating a fatal road accident that claimed the life of one person and left three others critically injured on Wednesday evening.

According to the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, the accident occurred on 12th November 2025 at around 7:00 p.m. at Kakabada, Butagatsi in Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality, along the Rukungiri–Kihiihi road.

The deceased has been identified as Nelson Mandela, a 34-year-old boda boda rider of motorcycle registration number UGG 362N Bajaj Boxer, and a resident of Karangaro, Western Division in Rukungiri Municipality.

The injured have been identified as Amanya Bruce (32) and Jolly Mugume (45), both residents of Kahororo–Karangaro, who were passengers on Mandela’s motorcycle. Another boda boda rider, Nabasa Amos, a resident of Furuma Village, Karangaro Ward, also sustained serious injuries.

Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased was carrying two passengers from Nyakibale Hospital heading towards Kihiihi when another motorcycle suddenly joined the main road from a feeder road near the Rukungiri District Headquarters. The two motorcycles collided, leaving all four people seriously injured.

They were rushed to Case Clinic in Rukungiri, where Nelson Mandela was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other victims are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.

Police visited and documented the scene, and the deceased’s motorcycle was towed to the police yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). The second motorcycle was allegedly taken from the scene by unidentified individuals and remains untraced.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Rwakabengo Mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

ASP Maate urged all road users, especially motorcyclists, to observe traffic regulations and avoid reckless maneuvers that could endanger lives.
