Residents from Nyarutuntu Sub County in Ntungamo District have continued to raise concerns over the poor state of their roads, which they say is hindering development in the area.
It has been reported that most of the roads in Nyarutuntu Sub County are in a deplorable condition, causing anxiety among locals.
According to Twinogisha Roland, a resident of Nyarutuntu Sub County, the situation worsens whenever it rains heavily, making it extremely difficult for vehicles to navigate through the roads.
Charles Bagarukayo, another resident from the same area, stated that many roads in the sub county are in a bad state, singling out the Karambi–Nyaburiza road, which he described as being in an alarming condition, despite it being a sub county road.
Charles noted that this particular road serves as a key route to their sub county hospital in Nyaburiza and has negatively impacted the delivery of services in the area.
Additionally, he pointed out that the majority of residents in the sub county are farmers, who face challenges in transporting their agricultural produce—such as matooke and milk—to different markets, which he believes is a major setback to their development.
In response, John Wilton Katooma, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyarutuntu Sub County, explained that Nyarutuntu is a newly created sub county that was carved out of Ntungamo Sub County in 2019. He said the sub county has never received road funds, and although they initially relied on communal labor, the current road conditions are now beyond what human effort can manage. He called on the relevant authorities to urgently address the situation.
Katooma further revealed that most of the sub counties established around the same time as Nyarutuntu have also not received road funds. He thus urged residents to understand that the challenge is not unique to Nyarutuntu, but is shared by other newly created sub counties as well.
