Leaders and residents of Nyarushanje Subcounty, Rukungiri District, decry poor usage and handling of roads in the subcounty.
Speaking to our reporter, Enid Twikyirize, a resident of Ibanda Parish, raised her concerns on the matter, saying people no longer have the spirit of love for others, depending on how they put bricks, stones, humps of soil, firewood, and timber in the middle of the road, causing accidents.
She further said this has been a common case in the sub-county, calling for sensitization from their area leaders, anticipating that maybe many people do it without knowing its bad effects.
Nyarushanje Subcounty Chief, Henry Kamugisha, also raised his voice on the matter, saying especially those who make charcoal leave the big poles in the middle of the road, acknowledging that they’re aware and the council has a plan of attending to the culprits accordingly.
Alex Atweta, a boda boda rider from Nyarushanje Subcounty, also showed frustration on the matter, saying they have registered many accidents as a result of these unnecessary materials left in the middle of the road, adding that it puts their lives at risk.
He further said many leave their animals to graze on the road, especially goats and cows. To make the matter worse, they even fail to chase them off the road while grazing, calling their leaders to do something on the matter for the safety of road users.
Micheal Musiime, the Chairperson LC3 of Nyarushanje Subcounty, acknowledged the habit, saying those near the road misuse it by leaving bricks meant for construction in the middle of the road for months, making the road too small for riders and causing many accidents.
He further strongly warned the culprits that the road is for road users, saying they should only use the road reserves and not extend into the middle of the road. He warned them that in case of any accidents, the culprits will be questioned.
