Nyakishojwa Secondary School in Kabira Town Council, Mitooma District, has registered a low student enrollment turnout of 28 percent two days after the official opening of schools, prompting the school administration to urge parents to urgently send learners to school so they can catch up with others.

Two days after the Ugandan government officially opened schools, Nyakishojwa Secondary School has received only 28 percent of its expected enrollment. The school, located in Kabira Town Council, Mitooma District, had projected an enrollment of about 1,400 students based on last year’s figures, but only 450 students have so far reported for the 2026 first term.

Speaking to Boona Radio on Tuesday evening, the school headteacher, Mr. Edward Agaba, confirmed that the school officially opened on Monday, noting that serious studies and the curriculum commenced on the second day, which was Tuesday. He explained that despite the school having all the necessary infrastructure and services, the turnout remains low, though he expressed optimism that enrollment will rise to between 1,400 and 1,500 students in the coming days, given the continued partnership and cooperation with parents.

Mr. Edward blamed delays by parents in sending their children back to school, warning that this could lead to academic backwardness, especially since the education system has shifted to the new lower secondary curriculum. He called upon parents to take immediate action and send students to school, emphasizing that even those without school fees should report as parents continue to look for funds at home.

Meanwhile, Mr. Edward also addressed the frightening incident that occurred last year when candidate classes demonstrated and burned one of the school hostels. He said the situation is now under control, as all affected buildings and infrastructure have been repaired, security has been strengthened, additional watchmen deployed, and CCTV cameras installed.
