Hundreds of mourners gathered in Kabagyenda village, Ntungamo Municipality, to pay their last respects to the renowned teacher, George Bush Tumwebaze, who passed away on Saturday evening due to complications related to hypertension.
Tumwebaze, who had served as a teacher and head teacher in 28 schools across Ntungamo District, had recently been transferred in July to Nyabikungu Primary School in Rwampara District as the head teacher.
Several speakers eulogized Tumwebaze as a dedicated, peaceful, and inspirational educator who impacted generations and motivated many to achieve success.
Ntungamo Municipality MP Yona Musinguzi highlighted the growing challenges posed by hypertension and diabetes, which he referred to as modern-era illnesses. He emphasized the need for lifestyle changes, including regular exercise, to combat these conditions.
Rwampara District Chairman Richard Owomugasho remarked on the rarity of educators like Tumwebaze, describing him as a transformative teacher and a community change agent whose loss is deeply felt.
Ntungamo District Chairman Sam Mucunguzi pointed out pressing issues in the education sector, such as teacher recruitment, retention, and promotion. He noted that some teachers have served for over 25 years without promotion, which he described as a major factor in low morale and school performance.
Tumwebaze is survived by his wife, Allen, a matron at Kyamate Secondary School, and their five children.
