The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party has retained its dominance in Rukungiri District following the Sub-county Chairpersons and Parish Councillors general elections held on 4th February 2026.
Out of the district’s 16 sub-counties, divisions, and town councils, NRM secured leadership in 12, while the opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party won four positions.
The PFF-affiliated leaders elected include incumbent Agaba Emmy Rubondo, Musinguzi Julius Bernard of Buyanja Town Council, Sunday George Rwakinwa of Bikurungu Town Council, and Gershom Twesigye of Eastern Division.
NRM candidates who emerged victorious include Gumisiriza Joel for Southern Division, Twinomugisha Sylvia for Western Division, Mugisha Benon Aunt for Buhunga Sub-county, Muhanguzi Leonard for Kebisoni Town Council, Frank Arinaitwe Mabwa for Kebisoni Sub-county, Twinomujuni Wednesday for Nyakishenyi, Gershom Nuwagaba Salongo for Bwambara Sub-county, Innocent Turyahabwe, also known as Kaino, Godson Mubangizi for Nyakagyeme, Mujuni Bruno for Nyarushanje Sub-county, Tumusiime Catherine for Rwerere Town Council, and Hellen Kabajungu for Ruhinda Sub-county.
Following the elections, the newly elected leaders called for unity and collective responsibility in driving development across the district. Emphasis was placed on setting aside political differences to focus on improved service delivery, infrastructure development, and addressing key community needs such as water access, road maintenance, and public lighting.
Voters across the district welcomed the outcomes, urging both elected leaders and residents to work together for the common good and ensure that the mandate granted at the polls translates into tangible development for all communities in Rukungiri District.
