Candidates from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have dominated the recently concluded LC3 chairperson and town council mayoral elections in Rukungiri District, winning 12 out of the 16 seats across the district. The remaining four seats were taken by candidates from the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
The elections were held on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, with results officially announced between February 4 and 5 by the Rukungiri District Electoral Returning Officer, Namara K. Abas, at the district tally centre located at the Rukungiri District Headquarters.
Rubabo County Results
In Nyakishenyi Sub-county, the incumbent Twinomujuni Wednesday Gracious (NRM) retained the LC3 chairperson seat, defeating Arineitwe Isdol Matumbika.
Buyanja Town Council elected Julius Bernard Musinguzi (PFF) as mayor after he secured 863 votes, defeating Patrick Nyesigire (NRM) who garnered 613 votes.
In Kebisoni Sub-county, Mabwa Frank Arinaitwe (NRM) emerged victorious with 2,318 votes, beating Joseph Mwebembezi (PFF) who received 1,576 votes.
Meanwhile, Leonard Muhunguzi (NRM) won the Kebisoni Town Council mayoral seat with 1,900 votes, defeating Evarist Mubangizi (Independent) who got 1,595 votes and Zephas Abamanya (PFF) who scored 356 votes. Muhunguzi is a regular guest on ENAAMA ya Ruhanga on County Radio 87.6 FM.
In Buyanja Sub-county, Emmy Agaba Rubondo (PFF) posted a landslide victory with 5,691 votes, defeating Joseph Bainomugisha (NRM) who polled 2,797 votes.
Alex Mujuni Bruno (NRM) won the Nyarushanje Sub-county LC3 seat with 6,281 votes, defeating the incumbent Michael Musiime (PFF) who scored 4,799 votes.
Rukungiri Municipality Results
In the Eastern Division, Gershom Twesigye (PFF) won with 1,963 votes, defeating Moses Nuwagaba (NRM) who got 1,440 votes, and Amon Nuwamanya (Independent) with 106 votes.
The Southern Division seat was taken by Joel Gumisiriza (NRM) who secured 1,521 votes, defeating Gadson Mutabazi (PFF) with 1,243 votes, Vincent Katsimbura (Independent) with 91 votes, and Fred Kamugisha (Independent) who received no votes.
In the Western Division, Sylvia Twinomugisha Katimbira (NRM) was declared the duly elected LC3 chairperson.
Rujumbura County Results
In Bwambara Sub-county, Gershom Niwagaba (NRM) won with 3,157 votes, defeating Christopher Kahonaho Kagayano (Independent) who scored 1,869 votes, Banard Turyatunga Munini (PFF) with 1,155 votes, and Mustafa Aribariho (Independent) who polled 820 votes.
Innocent Turyahabwe (NRM), popularly known as Kaino, clinched the Bugangari Sub-county seat with 4,141 votes, beating Deus Ahimbisibwe (PFF) who obtained 2,530 votes, and Jaston Byamukama (Independent) with 29 votes.
In Ruhinda Sub-county, Erina Hellen Kabajungu (NRM) emerged winner with 3,748 votes, narrowly defeating Innocent Taremwa (Independent) who polled 3,262 votes, while Herbert Turyagyenda (PFF) received 74 votes.
Bikurungu Town Council elected George Sunday (PFF) as mayor with 876 votes, defeating Arthur Tugume (NRM) who received 761 votes.
In Rwerere Town Council, Catherine Tumusiime (NRM) won with 795 votes, beating Justus Turyahebwa (PFF) who got 691 votes, and Henry Bazimbana Ngateireyo (Independent) who scored three votes.
Additionally, Benson Mugisha (NRM), commonly known as Auntie, was declared the winner of the Buhunga Sub-county LC3 chairperson seat, while Godson Mubangizi (NRM) secured victory in Nyakagyeme Sub-county.
The results underline NRM’s continued political dominance in Rukungiri District, despite notable inroads made by the PFF, particularly in select sub-counties and municipal divisions.
