President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni convened with a delegation of farmers hailing from Ntungamo and Rukungiri districts at State House-Entebbe on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Leading the group were Maj. Gen. (Rtd). Jim Muhwezi, the Minister of Security and Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, and Ms. Peace Rugambwa, Chairperson of Boona Bagagawale-Nyekundire Group Limited in Ntungamo District.

During the gathering, President Museveni reiterated the significance of empowering individuals with small parcels of land through the adoption of the innovative four-acre farming model. He emphasized the model’s promotion of diversification, with one acre allocated to coffee cultivation, another to fruit trees, the third to staple crops for household consumption, and the fourth to pasture for livestock. Additionally, President Museveni highlighted the potential for backyard activities such as poultry rearing, piggery, and fish farming in ponds.

The President underscored that this approach aligns with the current Parish Development Model (PDM), facilitating the transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture and fostering economic prosperity and sustainable livelihoods within communities.

Moreover, President Museveni stressed the importance of unity and cohesion among National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters to effectively leverage government programs like PDM and Emyooga. He urged attendees to champion these initiatives and disseminate their benefits widely among the populace.

In other announcements, President Museveni revealed the government’s decision to elevate Uganda Martyrs Technical Institute Nyarushanje to the Engineering Faculty of Mbarara University of Science and Technology. “Promoting as many science disciplines as possible is a key mandate of the government,” President Museveni affirmed.

The meeting also saw the presence of Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, district leaders from Rukungiri, including Geoffrey Kyomukama, the district chairperson, district councilors, and other esteemed opinion leaders.
