Authorities at Mitooma Primary School, a government-aided institution in Kahoko Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, have urgently appealed to the government for assistance in constructing additional pit latrines. Currently, a single pit latrine is shared by over 350 pupils and 12 teachers, posing a serious risk to their health and safety.

Michael Abisinguza, a teacher at the school, expressed concern about the inadequate number of latrines, emphasizing the discomfort of teachers sharing facilities with pupils. This situation violates government guidelines, which recommend separate lavatories for staff, boys, and girls. The lack of proper sanitation facilities is a common issue in many government-aided schools, demanding immediate attention.

Edith Twinomujuni, Deputy Head Teacher at Mitooma Primary School, highlighted the impact of insufficient sanitary facilities and classrooms on the current enrollment. She stressed that parents alone cannot address these challenges, necessitating government intervention. Teachers have become apprehensive about using the latrines, and sometimes they opt for distant church facilities due to long queues of children.

Twinomujuni revealed that, in response to the crisis, the school authorities sought assistance from the Rukungiri Woman Member of Parliament. Hon. Medius Kaharata donated iron sheets to help construct additional latrines while awaiting government support. She also mentioned that the limited capitation grant received by the school is primarily allocated to purchasing scholastic materials. Additionally, some classrooms are in poor condition, lacking cemented floors and posing health risks to the pupils.

The school stakeholders expressed gratitude to Hon. Medius Kaharata for her positive response to their request and acknowledged her efforts in supporting the school.
