Mbarara district has ranked 8th in the country for the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), a result attributed to the dedication of inspired and patriotic teachers, local political leaders, school committees, foundation bodies, and government support. This was revealed by the district secretary for social services, Kansiime Abraham Maanigye, during the official release of the PLE results at the district headquarters in Kamukuzi.

While addressing primary school head teachers, Kansiime acknowledged the efforts of the school community and leadership, particularly the team at Kyamatambarire Primary School, which has excelled for the third consecutive time. Rubindi Girls’ Primary School followed in second place, with Rubindi Boys’ Primary School securing the third position.

Mbarara District Inspector of Schools, Mrs. Ayebazibwe Kellen Kabeho, shared that out of the 3,547 pupils who registered and sat for the exams, 1,007 passed in Division One, 2,229 in Division Two, 199 in Division Three, and 44 in Division Four. However, she also disclosed that 21 pupils were ungraded and would not be eligible for certificates. Despite this, Ayebazibwe emphasized that Mbarara performed exceptionally well compared to other districts, excluding municipalities and cities.

Ayebazibwe highlighted the challenges some schools face, particularly inadequate infrastructure, but praised the resilience of both learners and teachers who have managed to excel despite the conditions. She appealed to former students, school foundation bodies, political leaders, and MPs to mobilize resources to support outstanding pupils from vulnerable backgrounds, ensuring they can continue their secondary education.

District Education Officer, Mr. Deo Muhwezi, added that in the previous financial year, a report on dilapidated school structures was presented to the government, leading to an allocation of 365 million shillings for repairs. However, he noted that the funds were insufficient to address all the needs and announced plans to renovate 33 primary schools in the current financial year.
