Anti-riot police in Rukungiri were on Monday deployed to quell protests by students from Kyamakanda Secondary School, who were demonstrating against their suspension from the ongoing Rukungiri District Secondary School Football Championship.
The students were intercepted near Nyakibale Hospital along Rukungiri-Ntungamo road as they attempted to report their grievances to the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese.
According to the protesting students, they believe their school headteacher, Turyamusiima David, colluded with Rukungiri District sports officers to suspend them from the tournament. Allegations suggest that the headteacher’s initial refusal to let them participate led to their subsequent suspension.
In a plea to the diocese, the students demanded the transfer of the headteacher, citing his alleged dictatorial management style as intolerable. They threatened to mobilize fellow students to expel him from the school if their demands were not met.
However, police urged the students to seek reconciliation with school authorities rather than resorting to unlawful means. Heavy police deployment was observed at the school premises as tensions remained high.
Kyamakanda Secondary School’s suspension from the tournament stemmed from alleged disciplinary issues among students and supporters. Their exclusion adds to a list of schools, including Nyabushenyi High School (suspended for fielding overage players), Bwambara Modern Secondary School (suspended for failing to fulfill a fixture), and Buyanja Grammar (suspended for student impersonation), who have faced similar sanctions during the competition.
