Heavy rains recently destroyed the Kiruruma Bridge, a vital link between Kanungu Town Council and Rugyeyo Sub County in Kanungu district. This has severely disrupted transportation services along the Kanungu-Rugyeyo-Kisiizi road.

Joseph Akakwasa, the Councilor for Rugyeyo Sub County, expressed concern over the bridge’s destruction during the ongoing heavy rains, emphasizing the risks posed to people and vehicles. He urged district leaders and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to intervene promptly, noting the significant usage of the road by residents of Rugyeyo Sub County, Nyakabungo Town Council, and those traveling to Rukungiri.

Akakwasa highlighted the impact on farmers who rely on the road to transport agricultural produce to market centers and deliver tea to factories like the Kigezi Highland Tea Factory in Rugyeyo Sub County.

Eng. Sam Arineitwe Kajojo, the Kanungu District Chairperson, reported that he has already notified UNRA’s Kabale regional office about the issue, emphasizing the transportation challenges in the area. He stated that UNRA has assured him that a team will visit the site this week to assess and address the situation.
