As the Easter festivities approach, the territorial police in the Kigezi region have issued a strong call for vigilance, safety, and discipline among residents, travelers, and business owners to ensure a peaceful celebration.
In a statement delivered by the Kigezi Police Spokesperson, ASP Maate Elly, the force expressed gratitude to the Almighty God for preserving life since the beginning of the year and extended appreciation to stakeholders, local leaders, and the general public for their continued cooperation in the fight against crime.
“To ensure that we go through the Easter season without any problems, a number of security measures must be considered,” ASP Maate emphasized.
The police cautioned drivers, especially those operating in the region’s hilly terrain, to observe full road discipline and adhere to the highway code. Motorists were warned against over speeding, drunk driving, and using unroadworthy vehicles, all of which pose significant risks to lives.
“Drivers should not make return routes without adequate rest. Fatigue endangers not only their lives but also the lives of passengers and other road users,” Maate added.
Security has also been tightened around public gathering spots, including bars, pubs, cinemas, disco halls, guest houses, lodges, and churches. Owners of such establishments have been urged to install walk-through and metal detector machines to enhance safety at entry points.
Additionally, parents and guardians were reminded not to leave children unattended at home or let them roam alone during the festive period, a move aimed at preventing potential harm or abduction.
“Peace and security are a collective responsibility. Let us remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious persons or abandoned objects to the nearest police post or station,” said ASP Maate.
He concluded by reassuring the public that the police, alongside sister security forces, are fully alert and deployed to ensure the Easter season is celebrated in peace.
