As the countdown to the end of 2023 begins, communities are preparing for festive celebrations in Kigezi. However, the local police are urging citizens to stay vigilant and prioritize security for a safe transition into the new year.

Elly Mate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, emphasized the importance of collaboration with territorial police commanders for those participating in entertainment centers and religious gatherings, especially overnight prayers.

In an official statement, Kigezi police outlined safety measures for the public to follow during the celebrations. These include a strict prohibition on burning Christmas trees and tires in public places and along roads, with legal consequences for violators. Additionally, a warning has been issued against celebratory firing of firearms by security personnel, emphasizing responsible conduct to avoid threats to public safety.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and avoid reckless driving under the influence of alcohol. Law enforcement agencies have committed to a visible presence on roads to deter and address potential traffic violations.

Concerns have been raised about large groups chanting and marching in the streets, with authorities cautioning against such behavior due to potential risks. Residents are urged to celebrate in a controlled manner, avoiding situations that could make them vulnerable to criminal activities.

Citizens are reminded to secure their homes and not leave them unattended. Parents are encouraged to ensure the safety of their children by keeping a watchful eye on them throughout the festivities. Mate assured that the police would remain on high alert to swiftly respond to any security concerns.
